The Phellodendron tree is native to east and northeast Asia and is in the family Rutaceae.  Rutaceae is a family of plants commonly known as the rue or citrus family.  Ranging in size from herbs to shrubs to small trees, the most economically important genus in the family is Citrus, which includes the orange, lemon, grapefruit, and lime.

The species Phellodendron amurense is one of 50 fundamental herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine.  Phellodendron has also attracted the attention of the pharmaceutical industry because of the phytochemicals  it produces.  Berberine has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. Jatrorrhizine may be anti-mutagenic. Phellandrine has promise as an immune suppressant. Palmatine may be a vasodilator.
